A foldable mattress, also known as a guest mattress or folding mattress, is an extra sleeping place that you store folded in a closet or under the bed. At SASA Store, you will find two types. Compact guest mattresses from Softline and Karup Design (€209 to €469), which serve as a pouf, side table, or seat cushion during the day. And our own organic futon mattresses, 80 to 200 cm wide, which fold in half: a foldable mattress for two people, 12 or 15 cm thick. You can try them out in our showroom in Bergen op Zoom.

What is a folding mattress?
You fold a folding mattress into two or three sections so that it takes up little space when not in use. Most folding mattresses you see online are made of 6 to 10 cm thin foam and are 60 to 70 cm wide: good for a child or one night, but too small for an adult who stays over frequently. That is why we have set it up differently: a guest mattress that is also useful during the day, or a real futon that folds in half.
Which foldable mattress suits you?
Compact guest mattress: Handy, Bed in a Bag and Wrap
De mobile from Softline folds into thirds into a compact package that you can take with you or put in the cupboard; single-person, and also a play mat for children. The cover is available in eco cotton, chunky woven fabric, or wool, in dozens of colors. The Bed in a Bag from Karup Design is a single mattress measuring 70×190 cm and 5 cm thick, with four layers of wool blend around a foam core; you roll it up and store it in the included fabric bag. The Wrap from Karup Design is a foldable futon measuring 70×200 cm, 12 cm thick, with a sitting and a reclining position: a floor chair by day, a guest bed by night.
Pouf, side table, and guest bed in one: Bingo
De Bingo From Softline is a triple-fold mattress that measures 65×195 cm when open. When folded, it is a pouf; with the included aluminium tray, a side table; when unfolded, a guest bed. The same fabrics and colors as the Handy.
Foldable mattress for two people: double-folded futon
If you are looking for a folding mattress of 140×200, 160×200 or larger, take a look at our organic futon mattressesThey are handmade from cotton, wool, coconut, or latex, 12 or 15 cm thick, and available in widths from 80 to 200 cm. You fold a futon in half: a 160×200 becomes a 160×100 cm package that stands against the wall or in a closet. In Japan, people have traditionally slept on a futon directly on the floor or on tatami mats, so a bed is not necessary. That makes the futon the only foldable mattress you can also sleep on every night.
What should you look for in a folding mattress?
- Thickness: 5 cm (Bed in a Bag) is enough for an occasional guest; 12 cm (Wrap and the Coconut, Wool, and Latex futons) or 15 cm (Traditional futon) for those who stay over more often.
- Width: 65 to 70 cm for one person; 140 to 200 cm for two, only as a futon.
- Filling: wool blend with foam core (Karup), cotton, wool, coconut or latex (futon). Natural fillings ventilate better than foam.
- Stow away: in thirds (Handy, Bingo), rolled up in a bag (Bed in a Bag) or folded in half (futon).
- During the day: pouf and side table (Bingo), floor chair (Wrap), play mat (Handy).
- Substrate: floor, tatami or slatted base; a futon adapts to any surface.

Can you fold a mattress?
A regular pocket spring mattress won't. A foam mattress or futon will: our futon mattresses fold in half, the guest mattresses into thirds, and the Bed in a Bag rolls up.
What is a good folding mattress?
For an adult, at least 65 cm wide and preferably 10 cm or thicker, with a filling that ventilates. For regular use, a 12 or 15 cm futon is the better choice.
Is there a foldable mattress for 2 people?
Yes: our futon mattresses 140, 160, 180, or 200 cm wide, fold in half, and sleep like a full-size double mattress.
How thick is a folding mattress?
