The authentic Japanese tatami mat 80×200 cm from Karup Design is the size for a 160 cm wide futon bed: two 80 cm mats together form the 160×200 cm bed base. A tatami replaces the wooden slatted base with a solid, slightly resilient plate of rice straw with a top layer of rush grass, 5,5 cm thick.
The 160 is a popular bed size, and used separately, the 80 is a sturdy floor mat for yoga, meditation, or a play corner. Two pieces side by side create a piece of Japanese flooring measuring 160 by 200 cm; with a futon mattress on top, it becomes a frameless bed.
Two mats of 80 under a bed of 160
When configuring a 160×200 cm Karup futon bed, select “2x tatami 80×200 cm” as the bed base, for example when Japan natural 160×200 cm or for Ziggy natural 160×200 cmThe futon mattress then rests on the two mats instead of on the slatted base. If you buy the mats separately for an existing 160 cm bed, you need two.

On the floor or as a headboard
A tatami does not have to be placed in a bed. On the floor, it serves as a solid surface for sitting, meditating, or playing, and upright against the wall, it acts as a headboard behind a low bed. Those who want the full Japanese bedroom look lay multiple mats side by side and place a futon mattress on top.
Maintenance
Keeping it dry is the most important thing: moisture causes mold. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, without using harsh cleaning agents. Vacuum on the lowest setting with a brush attachment and follow the weave direction; vacuuming against the grain will damage the grass. Do not place anything on the mat that retains moisture, such as a carpet, and allow air to pass through the top or bottom. Airing the mat on a dry, sunny day is good for it.
