What is a futon sofa bed?
The word futon comes from Japan, where a futon is a thick cotton mattress that is rolled up during the day and lies on the floor at night. A futon sofa bed combines such a mattress with a solid wood frame. The mattress serves as both the seat and the bed: you fold or unfold the frame and the mattress lies flat, without any mechanism, without a gap in the middle, and without loose parts to search for in the evening.
The futon mattresses from Karup Design consist of multiple layers of recycled cotton surrounding a 4 to 6 cm foam core, held together by buttons and finished with a cover of 80% cotton and 20% polyester. The mattress is 12 to 15 cm thick, firm, and flat. That feels different from a soft box spring, but that is precisely why a futon provides such good support and why you can sleep on it every night. Roots: lounge, sofa, and bed in one movement
De roots 140 and the roots 160 are our best-selling futon sofa beds. Raise the backrest and stretch your legs, and you have a lounge sofa; lower the back and the sofa is a bed measuring 140×200 or 160×200 cm. Grab, Knob, Lean, Unwind, Folk and Base: 130 cm wide
These doubters each have their own way of unfolding. At the Grave detach the armrests and fold open the sofa; the mattress has a 5 cm foam core. The Knob has 50s-style buttons under the armrests and becomes a bed with a single movement. The Lean stands on three legs and has a folding system, the Unwind is a three-seater sofa with a wide armrest that serves as a side table and a 14 cm thick mattress, the Folk combines rounded edges with metal armrests and the Base is designed by the architects of CF Møller for small homes and studios.
Hippo, Shin Sano, Fresh, Buckle, Chico and Flip: 140×200 cm
For two people, 140×200 cm is the most popular size. The Hippo has an extra thick futon mattress that folds from sofa to bed, with a seat height of 25 cm. The Shin Sano has a wooden slatted frame as a backrest, two back cushions of 50×55 cm and a 15 cm thick mattress. The Fresh stands on wheels: tilt the frame and pull the seat towards you. The Buckle becomes a bed in three steps and has two futon mattresses stacked on top of each other, 12 cm and 5 cm. The Chico consists of two 80×200 cm tatami mats with two futons and four back cushions on top, without hinges: you lay it out as a 4-seater sofa, corner sofa, or double bed. Hooked: the sofa bed that hangs on the wall
De Hooked It takes up no space when not in use: it hangs on the wall from four brackets. When placed in the lowest position, it becomes a sofa; unfold the mattress onto the floor, and you have a bed in a few seconds. The futon mattress is 12 cm thick. What should you look for in a futon sofa bed?
- Bed size: 80×200 for one person, 130 cm wide as a small double, 140×200 or 160×200 for two. Also measure the space when the sofa is unfolded: as a sofa, the depth is usually 90 to 105 cm, as a bed 200 cm.
- Matrass: all Karup futons have layers of recycled cotton around a foam core; the total thickness is between 12 and 15 cm. If you want a softer sleeping surface, you place a futon topper us.
- Expand: back down (Roots), loosen armrests (Grab), tilt frame (Fresh) or lay down mattress (Chico, Hooked). Choose what you find comfortable every night.
