A futon bed doesn't have to be light or dark; it can also have color. The Karup Japan Terra futon bed 160×200 cm is the same low, solid wood bed as the Japan in natural or carob brown, but lacquered in the color Terra, a warm earth tone. The frame is 188 cm wide, 228 cm long, and 20 cm high, and stands on eight short legs. You determine the entry height yourself with the futon or mattress you place on top.
Terra works as an accent color in an otherwise calm bedroom: against white, sand, or light gray, the frame stands out without becoming harsh, and with natural wood, linen, and a green plant around it, it feels warm and earthy. Those who prefer not to let the bed stand out choose natural. Those who actually want a splash of color in the room have come to the right place.
The same Japan, a different coat
Beneath the lacquer lies the Japan that Karup Design has been producing for years: solid wood from Scandinavian forests with FSC certification, a rectangular frame on eight legs, and a solid wood slatted base that is included as standard, just like the assembly instructions. If you prefer to sleep on a traditional surface, two 80×200 cm tatami mats fit into the frame, featuring a rice straw core and a rush grass top layer.

Add a futon or bring your own mattress
You configure the bed with a futon from Karup or order it without a futon and place your own mattress on top. The futons consist of layers of cotton around a core:
- Traditional: coreless cotton, approximately 13 cm
- Comfort: cotton with a 4 cm foam core, approximately 15 cm
- Coconut: cotton with a 3 cm coconut board core, approximately 16 cm
- Sandwich: cotton with a core of 4 cm latex foam and 3 cm coconut board, approximately 16 cm
- Double latex: cotton with an 8 cm latex foam core, approximately 18 cm
- Triple latex: cotton and wool with a core of 6 cm latex foam and 2 cm horsehair, approximately 20 cm

Organic sleeping on a colored bed
The Karup futons are made from recycled cotton, an eco-friendly choice that is not organically certified.
