Black lacquered solid wood, 20 cm high, 188 cm wide: the Karup Japan black futon bed 160×200 cm is Japan in its sleekest form. Where natural materials look light and friendly, black draws a sharp line on the floor. This suits a bedroom with contrast: white walls, a dark or light floor, and textiles in grey, white, or a single color.
The bed remains what it has always been: a low platform on eight legs, 228 cm long, on which you place a futon or your own mattress. The entry height therefore depends on what you choose.
Solid and lacquered
Karup Design makes the frame from solid wood sourced from FSC-certified Scandinavian forests and finishes it black. The solid wood slatted base is included as standard, as is the assembly manual. For a traditional surface, replace the slats with two 80×200 cm tatami mats, featuring a rice straw core and a rush grass top layer. The contrast of the light straw against the black frame perfectly captures the image of a Japanese bedroom.

The futon
You choose a Karup futon when configuring or order the bed without a futon. The futons are made of cotton, most with a core:
- Traditional: coreless cotton, approximately 13 cm
- Comfort: cotton with a 4 cm foam core, approximately 15 cm
- Coconut: cotton with a 3 cm coconut board core, approximately 16 cm
- Sandwich: cotton with a core of 4 cm latex foam and 3 cm coconut board, approximately 16 cm
- Double latex: cotton with an 8 cm latex foam core, approximately 18 cm
- Triple latex: cotton and wool with a core of 6 cm latex foam and 2 cm horsehair, approximately 20 cm

Organic on black
The Karup futons are made from recycled cotton, eco-friendly but not organically certified. If you want a mattress that is produced entirely organically, without chemicals and pesticides, with certificates and quality marks, and a more luxurious finish, then choose the organic futon mattress Traditional 160×200 cm and order the bed without a futon.
