Futon beds
Futon beds combine the best of two worlds: the tranquility and simplicity of a Japanese bed with the sleek design of Scandinavian furniture. This unique combination is also known as Japandi: an interior style in which minimalism, functionality, and natural materials take center stage. A futon bed is therefore also called a (low) Japanese bed or platform bed, because the bed sits close to the floor. This makes your bedroom appear more spacious and creates a calm atmosphere. At the same time, the bed offers a comfortable sleeping place that suits modern interiors. At SASA Store, you will find the largest collection of Karup Design futon beds in the Benelux, and you can try out several of them yourself in our showroom in Bergen op Zoom.

Japanese bed: tranquility and minimalism in your bedroom
A Japanese bed is known for its simplicity. Traditionally, in Japan, people sleep on a futon that rests directly on the floor or on a low wooden frame, without unnecessary decorations or a high bed base. That principle forms the basis for the modern Japanese bed as you know it today. Because the bed stands close to the floor, visually more space remains in the room, which contributes to a calming feeling. A low Japanese bed is therefore a popular choice for those who consciously opt for less clutter and more clarity in the bedroom, for example in a Japandi-style interior or a compact space.
The benefits of a futon bed
A futon bed has several advantages that make it a popular choice for modern, tranquil bedrooms. Because it is a low Japanese bed, it creates a spacious and peaceful feeling in the room. This fits perfectly with minimalist and Scandinavian interiors. Additionally, futon beds are often space-saving, as the simple platform bed takes up little space and is therefore ideal for smaller bedrooms, studios, or guest rooms. Furthermore, futon beds offer firm and ergonomic support for the body, which can contribute to a healthy sleeping posture. The matching futon mattresses They are often made from natural materials such as cotton and coconut fiber, making them durable, breathable, and low-maintenance; airing them out occasionally and turning them from time to time is usually sufficient. Therefore, when you choose to buy a futon bed, you are opting not only for a stylish bed but also for comfort, functionality, and a calm appearance in your bedroom.

Buying a Japanese bed: what to look for?
You choose a Japanese bed primarily based on height, wood, and what you want around it. These are the differences within our collection.
Height
Our futon beds have a frame height of 10 cm (Social) to 35 cm (Orbit). The classic low Japanese bed is Karup Japan: a 19 cm frame, with a futon mattress an entry height of about 34 cm. Prefer something a little higher for easier getting up? Then take a look at models like Merge (32,5 cm) or Core (34 cm), or at our low beds up to 25 cm.
Wood and load-bearing capacity
The beds from Karup Design are made of solid, FSC-certified pine wood, lacquered in natural or carob brown; the Japan bed is also available in colors such as sage, terra, and black. The beds from Tojo are made of solid beech wood with a load capacity of 200 to 250 kg; they are available from 90×200 to 200×200 cm and the Tojo Lie can be expanded later.
Bed base: slatted base or tatami
The Karup futon beds come with a solid wood slatted base. If you want a truly Japanese look, you choose the following for a large number of the Karup beds: tatami mats as a bed base: rice straw mats on which the futon rests, as in a Japanese bedroom.
Headboard, nightstands and storage space
A Japanese bed traditionally has no headboard; if you do want one, choose Retreat or Layer. Matching nightstands are available for Dock, Elan, Senza, and Japan, and backrests for a number of models as well. If you are looking for a futon bed with storage space, then it has kanso two drawers under the frame and Basement an optional storage bench. If the bed needs to be able to be completely stowed away during the day, take a look at our folding beds.
The futon mattress with it
With every bed, you choose the mattress directly: from the firm traditional (cotton) via coconut and sandwich to double and triple latex for more resilience. You can read which one suits you in our advice on futon mattressesAll futon beds are delivered free of charge.

Frequently asked questions about futon beds
What is a futon bed?
A futon bed is a low bed frame, a platform bed, on which a futon mattress rests. The bed sits close to the ground and has a sleek, minimalist design originally inspired by the Japanese bed. Read more about what a futon bed is in our blog article.
What is the difference between a futon bed and a platform bed?
At its core, a futon bed is a platform bed: a low frame without a raised base. The difference lies in the mattress. A futon bed calls for a futon mattress made of natural materials, whereas a regular platform bed is often used with a standard mattress.
Which size futon bed should I choose for my bedroom?
That depends on the available space and the number of people sleeping on the bed. For a single room or guest room, 90×200 cm is often sufficient, while 140×200 cm or larger is suitable for a master bedroom.
Is a low Japanese bed suitable for every bedroom?
A low Japanese bed fits well with almost any interior, but comes into its own best in a minimalist or Scandinavian bedroom, where the tranquility and spaciousness of the low design blend well with the rest of the decor.
Is a futon bed good for your back?
A futon bed provides flat, firm support: the futon mattress rests on a slatted base or tatami and does not sag. Many people find this comfortable for their backs, especially those accustomed to a hard surface. The firmness of the bed is determined by the mattress: a traditional futon is the firmest, while latex futons are more springy. If you are unsure, we can help you find the right combination in the showroom or by phone.
Why do the Japanese sleep on a futon?
In Japan, the futon is traditionally a thin, foldable mattress that lies directly on tatami mats and is stored away during the day so that the room remains clear. Sleeping close to the floor is part of that way of living: simple, with minimal furniture. A modern Japanese bed transfers that low sleeping position to a wooden frame, allowing you to combine the tranquility of that style with a fixed sleeping place.
How high is a Japanese bed?
Lower than a regular bed. Our futon beds have a frame height between 10 and 35 cm; the Karup Japan bed is 19 cm high and approximately 34 cm with a mattress. For comparison: a standard box spring comes to 55 to 65 cm with a mattress.
