Wooden bed frame: pine or beech?

Karup Design beds are made of solid pine, with the knots and color variations that come with it. The wood is FSC Mix-certified and comes from Sweden and Estonia. The beds are manufactured in Estonia and Poland. Two models, the Core and the Layer, combine the pine with galvanized steel. Tojo, a German brand, builds its beds from laminated beech: thin layers of beech glued together. This allows the sections to be thin without warping.

Natural, carob brown or black

For most Karup beds, you choose natural: light pine, untreated in one model and clear lacquered in the other. This is stated per product. Additionally, there are models in carob brown (Japan, Core, Social, Ziggy, and Retreat) and in black (Japan and Peek). The Japan is also available in blue, green, terra, and orange. Tojo supplies all beds in natural beech.

Frame height and headboard

Eight Karup models and three Tojo models remain under 25 cm. They are also available at our low bedsThe others range between 26 and 41 cm; see the table below. If you want a headboard, take a look at the Peek (with two lights), the Latch (headboard and nightstands made of the same planks), the Layer with a headboard, or the Retreat, with built-in pockets in the headboard for a book or your phone. The Social has separate backrests and side tables, while the Kanso has optional drawers under the bed.

Sizes: from 90 to 200 cm wide

The bed size is the mattress size. A wooden bed of 160 x 200 is therefore intended for a mattress of 160 x 200 cm. The frame itself is wider and longer, and that outer dimension is listed on every product page. Below you can see which sizes are available per model.

Maintenance of a pine bed

Wood is a living material. Every frame has its own knots and color variations, and a pine bed from Karup Design becomes somewhat warmer and darker in color over the years. Otherwise, a wooden bed requires little care: do not place hot objects or candles on the wood, wipe away spills immediately with a damp cloth, and tighten the screws occasionally.

Frequently asked questions about wooden beds

What is the difference between solid pine and engineered beech?

Solid pine is wood from a single piece, with knots and grain that vary from plank to plank. Engineered beech consists of thin layers of beech wood glued together, ensuring it remains rigid and dimensionally stable. Pine has visible knots and grain, while engineered beech is smooth and sleek.

Does a pine bed discolour?

Yes, slowly. Natural pine takes on a warmer, slightly darker tint over the years. That is normal for solid wood.

Which mattress fits a wooden bed?

Any mattress in the size of the bed. A futon mattress lies the lowest and fits the low models, but a cold foam or pocket spring mattress fits just as well on the slatted base.

Is there a wooden bed in 160 x 200 or 180 x 200 cm?

Yes, almost every model is available in 160 x 200 and 180 x 200 cm, and the Tojo beds go up to 200 x 200 cm. In the table above, you can see which sizes are available per model.
